Ghost’s printed midi is our dress of the month

There’s nothing quite like a new dress at the start of the winter season to freshen up your wardrobe. Yes, you heard that right: dresses are a colder-month must-have.

While the mini dress is back in full force for autumn/winter 2022, it’s longer hemlines that we’ve come to rely on for so many years now – in particular midaxi lengths, which hit just above the ankle to create a really elegant silhouette. We love how they provide coverage in colder months (just add knee boots or tights) but feel breezy and cooling come summer.

Of course, longer dresses can look a little frumpy if you don’t get the shape right. You need something ultra-feminine that highlights the body in subtle ways. Take Ghost’s Audrey style: it’s cut to skim the torso and create an hourglass fit, then flares out to a swishy A-line skirt.

The heavy drape of the quality crepe is also what makes this number so flattering – it smooths any lumps and bumps (especially with some help from shapewear) and won’t ride up. We also love the voluminous balloon sleeves, keyhole cutout front and covered buttons running through the front.

London-based brand Ghost Fashion has been revered for its cult bias-cut gowns ever since it launched in 1984. Best-known for its formal designs, Millie Mackintosh dressed her bridesmaids in Ghost for her high-profile wedding to Professor Green in 2017 and Léa Seydoux wore one of her sage-green Olivia gowns in the 2015 Bond film Spectre.

However, a few years back the brand started leaning more heavily into ready-to-wear – and we’ve been hooked ever since. Ghost still champions its signature luxury fabrics like velvet, silk and satin, but this season it’s dropped a range of ’60s and ’70s-inspired styles which are creating a totally different mood. In fact, some of the retro prints look one-of-a-kind, like something you’d spot in a vintage store.

We’ve been obsessed with Ghost’s new drop ever since we spotted Holly Willoughby wearing one of the brand’s autumn/winter 2022 dresses on This Morning. (Her leopard-print, ditzy floral midi is still available to buy on the site, FYI.)

While we love the This Morning presenter’s patch-worked number, we think the tile-print Audrey will stand the test of time. The powder-blue tones are flattering on every skin tone, but it also comes in a taupe iteration if you prefer something more muted.

Wear yours now with knee high boots and a trench or shearling coat, then switch to trainers come Spring. This is one of those do-it-all dresses that will really serve you all year round.
