One of Carell’s earliest jobs was as a rural mail carrier in Littleton, Massachusetts in 1985. He only lasted four months in the job but as he mentioned on an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, it was one of the hardest jobs he has ever had. Because he was delivering mail in a small town rather than a big city, he wasn’t given a mail truck and instead had to drive his Toyota around town to deliver the mail. He ended up quitting as he said he wasn’t great at the job and ended up moving to Chicago shortly after.
8/9 Steve Carell Worked As A Radio DJ
When Carell was in college at Denison University, he worked the early morning hours as a DJ at the college radio station. He was a freshman and gave himself the name “Sapphire Steve” while on the air for the first time, as a way to poke fun at his mentor, who called himself “Diamond Doug.” Doug later told Denison University that Carell was “bright, talky, and he was a lot of fun to work with.”

In 2008, Carell and his wife, Nancy, bought out a general store in Marshfield Hills that was in danger of closing to save it from doing so. Carell’s sister-in-law runs the business in the town where Carell and his family spend their summers. These days now that his kids are older, they spend about six months out of the year back east, according to his interview on the Smartless podcast.

Carell’s father was half Italian and half German, while his mother was Polish. His last name was originally Caroselli but was changed to Carell in the 1950’s by his paternal grandfather. Carell told The Guardian that he likes the name Caroselli and said that it likely wouldn’t have gotten misspelled and mispronounced as much over the years as Carell has.

Carell told the story of his wedding day on the Smartless podcast. He said that before his wife walked down the aisle towards him, he was sweating profusely due to the August heat and humidity back east, where he got married. However, as soon as Nancy began walking down the aisle and he saw her, he stopped sweating and realized he was marrying the right woman as his nerves went away the moment he looked at her.

Carell has three older brothers, which makes him the baby of the family. His oldest brother, Gregory, is an architect, the second oldest, Timothy, is an engineer much like his father, and his third brother, Michael, runs a landscaping business. Carell told The Guardian that his closest brother in age was five years older than him, so he was too young to get into fights with them. He said his brothers protected him a lot.

Carell’s mother worked as a psych nurse for over 40 years during the night shift at a hospital. On the Smartless podcast, Carell spoke about how he really admired what his mother did for a living and how he used his talks with her about her job in his role as a therapist on The Patient. She passed away several years ago.

Carell’s father was Edwin A. Carell, and he was an electrical engineer. He passed away in March of 2021. Carell told The Guardian that he never met his paternal grandparents. He also said that his father would wake up at 5am to drive him to hockey practice before school in the mornings and sit there reading a book while he practiced. He credits his parents for teaching him how to raise his own.

In an interview with The Guardian, Carell explained that his wife grew up in a family with six children, and he grew up in a family with four. They didn’t grow up getting everything they wanted, and although Carell has plenty of money to give his kids whatever they want, he doesn’t do that. “You’re doing your kids a disservice if they do get everything they want because that’s not the way life is going to go,” he said.
